Out for a workout first thing in the morning again. A weekend workout in the sunshine on the rooftop haha. Iโm leaving for a conference at Promega tomorrow, so I took a quick look at which speakers Iโd like to talk to and got some proper rest. Itโs going to be a very packed three-day, two-night trip, with a brief connection in Chicago before Madison. Next time, Iโd really like to do some sightseeing, too haha.

I got up before dawn (a six a.m. flight..) and headed to Madison via Chicago! This trip is for a chemical biology conference at Promega. My friend Chet and I are going because weโre using BRETSA, a cellular target engagement assay that Promega recently released, in our research (Chet has already been using it and is presenting a poster, too). After spending ages traveling, I had dinner and spent time with some new people. Whew… It was so loud around us that I had trouble hearing what people were saying, which made things a bit difficult. Still, I got through the awkwardness and somehow managed to have a good time. Chet and I also went for a quick look at the nearby Wisconsin State Capitol. It was brief, but I took photos of some beautiful moments, from the building lit up at night to the lakeside views.

Day two of the conference. Maybe because of the time difference, I was up early, made some coffee, and got in a quick workout. Breakfast was amazing haha. They had tacos, so I added two over-easy eggs and had a very filling meal. Then I took the shuttle to the conference and got into the full schedule. It was really, really intense lol. It felt very much like I was there to study, which honestly wasnโt a bad thing. There was so much I wanted to take away from both the talks and the posters, and I ended up talking to a lot of people. One thing I realized on this trip is that there are so, so many important problems in the world, and maybe I donโt need to get scared in advance about what research Iโll spend my life doing. I also need to build my own expertise so I can confidently explain what I do and connect with other people through it. It made me want to work hard on my research again. In the evening, I went to Majestic Theatre for a performance organized by Promega (apparently, it was their in-house band haha). But ah… It was just too loud to talk to people, so I ducked out, went for a workout, and went to bed early.

Already the last day of the conference! There were talks until lunchtime, followed by a tour of Promega as the final activity, so I took some photos. Iโd actually wanted to see firsthand how they do research inside, so I was a little disappointed. I connected through Chicago on the way back, too, and had a Chicago-style hot dog at the airport. If I couldnโt go sightseeing in Chicago, at least I could have a hot dog lol. But it wasnโt particularly good. I arrived in San Francisco late at night, and it was well past eleven by the time I got home, so I went straight to bed. It all flew by, but I learned so much. Iโd always wondered why I should go to conferences, and this trip definitely changed my mind.

Nothing particularly special happened. I settled back into everyday life and shared a lot of the research ideas Iโd heard at the conference with people. I felt inspired and kept myself busy for these two days.. I keep thinking about Jimโs advice that I need to devote a substantial amount of time to my thesis.. Lately, I feel like other projects are taking up too much of my time. The good thing is that it isnโt just fruitless work and things are actually going well, but even so, I think I need to take better care of my own work first.

Today, my girlfriend and I were looking for a game we could play together and ended up trying the two-player cooperative escape room game weโd been considering. Itโs called The Past Within and is available on Steam. It has a really unusual setup: one person plays in the past and the other in the future at the same time, and you share information from your screens to unravel the mysteries of a cube. Having to work things out based on what the other person describes was pretty fun haha. But wow, Iโm glad we played during the day, because it was quite scary lol. We also spent time meal prepping together. Even when we arenโt making the same thing, itโs nice to chat while we each get our food ready haha. I used to play games an unbelievable amount in middle school. I pretty much stopped after my military service, although Iโve still occasionally watched gameplay videos on YouTube. Playing again after so long was really fun!
