What I want to do is…?
Sunday, October 4

Starting with exercise again! Finished our three-part workout with Jongbin, then enjoyed a sandwich outside and took a good rest. This week’s cooking was beef belly soba with a soy sauce base and a generous pile of cabbage (so simple, but possibly the best thing we’ve made so far..?!). These days I keep working even on weekends. I’m implementing an idea that combines our university HPC’s CPUs with externally rented GPUs, but something that seemed like it would just involve moving the computation over has turned out to be more complicated than expected. It hasn’t been as fast as I hoped, so I kept checking where the waiting happens. I want to be able to provide a single input structure and have everything run smoothly through the next stages, but making something that simple to use is really, really… much less simple than I expected haha..

These days I sometimes get to see a sky that beautiful on my way to the gym in the morning! Today I left work early and gave the house a thorough clean for a fresh start. I tried out the steam cleaner I recently bought on Amazon, and cleaning every corner of the bathroom, kitchen, and floors took more than three hours. It would be nice to clean thoroughly every week, but on days when I feel like I have a lot to do, just cleaning the floors and doing laundry feels like enough to keep me busy. Setting aside a day to do it properly feels really good, so I’d like to do it more often!

A fresh mindset, a new healthy life! Haha. Today I went through my morning routine, diet, and exercise one by one. I used going to bed at 9:30 p.m. and getting up at 5:45 a.m. as a starting point, then wrote out the whole sequence from waking up to leaving for the gym once again. I think I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed lately because I put in too much exercise, trying to do everything I wanted. Doing back and chest together was too hard to get through, so I tried splitting them up, and decided not to get too ambitious with shoulders and arms either. The leg routine is just right as it is haha. CoreHPC was going to clean up scratch during two days of maintenance, so I paused the computations and was backing up the data. I’d been in the middle of optimizing the workflow, so I also took another look at what problems remained. Today I also made a workflow for reading papers, recording them in Obsidian, and uploading only the public portions as blog drafts. Rather than simply summarizing a paper, it also considers how it connects to the different projects I’m working on! I hope this will make it easier to read more papers without feeling so much pressure.

Maybe it’s because the sun rises so much later now… With blackout curtains too, these days I can’t tell what time it is when I wake up. Today in the lab I prepared every buffer I could think of, enough for at least a year (somehow it felt as satisfying as meal prepping). I also reorganized the recipes so that next time I can make the amounts I need at convenient concentrations. In the afternoon I went to Bill’s lab group meeting and wrapped up the day well. The Asan Foundation had also announced its 2027 graduate scholarships in biomedical sciences a few days ago, so I prepared various documents to apply!

The setup I’d struggled with so much finally worked, and I got to do protein purification! I put the sample in the Superloop and the instrument injects it automatically. Ah.. it’s so nice. Getting here wasn’t exactly smooth, but understanding the entire AKTA flow path, where the sample goes and how it gets there, helped me solve the problems one by one, and thankfully it worked. The peaks are clean too. Why didn’t I think of doing it this way sooner? In the evening I looked up some recipes for the matcha tiramisu we’re making this Saturday, then went to Costco with Jongbin. By now the two of us practically shop on autopilot and get through it in under 30 minutes.

The protein purification has been going very smoothly, and today I went to lunch with Rodrigo, whom I see at the gym every morning (I think this was our first time eating together, just the two of us). We went to Street Taco, a Mexican taco place near campus, and he said he comes here every Friday. I respect him not only because he exercises consistently every day, but also because I think he works hard (he has a good work ethic). We had coffee afterward too, and, well.. it had been a while since I’d had such an in-depth conversation in English. We mostly talked about the lab environments we’ve experienced, what kind of labs we’d envision and want to run if we became PIs, and what we think meaningful science is, things like that.. Usually we mostly talk about the project we work on together, so talking this way felt new. Our conclusion was that our ideals are incredibly high, and that we need to keep lowering our expectations of other people. Of course, when interests are involved, it’s hardly going to be that easy.. So lately I’ve also been wanting to try giving something my all at a startup with a small group of no more than five like-minded people. I really still don’t know what I’ll end up doing.

I stopped by the lab, finished the final purification step, and both LC-MS and SDS-PAGE came out nice and clean! The project with An is going quite well, and I ordered genes for the part I can validate in vitro. Several other projects have been a bit of a struggle lately, with the ideas I had repeatedly not working out. Even though I thought I’d been through this plenty of times by now, sometimes I still find it hard to shake it off and actively think about the next thing to try. Still, as long as I have the will and the importance of this problem hasn’t changed, I’ll keep knocking on that door. I headed home quickly, and this week my girlfriend and I made matcha tiramisu. But apparently it needs to sit in the fridge for at least four hours, or even overnight, so after making it we ended up each making ourselves dinner too haha. Eomjine cockle bibimbap ordered from Weee! It wasn’t quite the same as going there and eating it in Korea, of course, but I couldn’t remember the last time I’d had cockles, and I really enjoyed it.
