보통 일요일에는 러닝을 하지만, 오늘은 아직 무릎이 완전히 다 나은 것 같지는 않아서 대신 아주 오랜만에 수영을 했다. 얼마 만인지 기억도 안 나는데, 정말 정말 못해졌다 ㅋㅋ 몇 번 왔다 갔다 하지도 않았는데 녹초가 되어서 한 바퀴 돌고 쉬고 돌고 쉬고…. 어떻게든 시간을 채우긴 했는데 아우 힘들어서 낮잠까지 잤다.

I usually go for a run on Sundays, but today my knee still wasn’t fully healed, so I swam for the first time in a while. I cannot even remember how long it has been, but I have gotten really, really bad, lol. I barely went back and forth a few times and I was already exhausted, so it was one lap, rest, one lap, rest. I managed to fill the time somehow, but it wiped me out so much that I even took a nap.

요즘 날이 아주 좋다 못해 최고여서 (간혹 비가 오긴 하지만) 문을 열어두고 편안하게 누워있으면 스르르 잠이 기분 좋게 든다. 오늘은 따로 연구실에 가지도 않았고, 밀린 블로그를 몰아 쓰고 집안일하는 것으로 하루를 마무리했다. 블로그를 쓴지 꽤 되어서, 소장용으로 1년마다 책으로 만들어보려고 생각을 하다가 좀 찾아봤는데 아니 생각보다 너무 비싸다.. 뭔가 pdf를 바꾼후에 내가 따로 출력을 하는 식으로 해야하지 않나 싶다. 보통 평일에는 다섯 시 반에 일어나기에 최대한 열 시 전에는 잠자리에 들려고 노력하고 있는데 역시 일요일에 일찍 눕기는 쉽지만은 않다.

The weather has not just been nice but honestly the best lately, even though it rains sometimes. If I leave the door open and lie down comfortably, sleep just comes naturally in the most pleasant way. I did not go to the lab today, and I wrapped up the day by binge writing the blog posts I had fallen behind on and doing chores around the house. Since it has been a while since I started blogging, I thought it would be nice to turn each year into a book, so I looked into it a bit, but wow, it is way more expensive than I expected. It feels like I should export the blog as a PDF and print it myself instead. On weekdays I wake up at 5:30, so I try hard to get into bed before 10, but somehow going to bed early on Sundays is still not that easy.

오늘 Martin Steinegger 교수님의 seminar가 gladstone에서 있어서 재밌게 들었다. 솔직히 고백하면 이분이 어디 소속인지 전혀 몰랐고, 아주 유명한 computational tool들을 많이 개발한 분이라는 것만 알았다. 알고 보니 내 화학부 동기도 이 방에서 연구를 했다는….

There was a seminar by Professor Martin Steinegger at Gladstone today, and I really enjoyed it. To be honest, I had no idea where he was affiliated, I only knew that he was someone who had developed a lot of very well-known bioinformatics computational tools. It turns out a friend from my chemistry department also did research in his group.

내 관심 분야와 크게 일치하지는 않지만, 분명 필요한 일을 하고 계신다는 건 잘 알 수 있는 발표였다. 무엇보다 크게 거리끼지 않고 아직 출판되기도 전의 연구를 여럿 보여주셨는데, Protein의 “Motif” searching을 할 수 있는 tool을 개발하고 있는 게 흥미로웠다. seminar와 TA 이외에는 특별한 건 없었고, 내일 Bill, Maggie와 back to back meeting이 있어 지금까지 내가 새로 알아낸 방법론에 대해 의견을 구하고자 발표 자료를 좀 만드는 데 시간을 거의 다 쏟았다.

It is not exactly aligned with my main interests, but it was clearly work that needs to exist. More than anything, I appreciated how openly he shared several projects that have not even been published yet. I was especially intrigued that he is developing a tool for motif searching in proteins. Other than the seminar and TA, nothing special happened, and since I have back to back meetings with Bill and Maggie tomorrow, I spent almost all my time putting together
some slides to ask for feedback on the methodology I have been digging into.

Tuesday, February 24

미팅을 하면서 생각도 여럿 정리되고, 실험도 열심히 했다. 다행히 기존에 진행하고 있었던 방향을 굳이 바꾸지 않아도 된다는 결론이 났고, 이제 속도를 붙여서 빨리 결과를 보는 게 더욱 중요하다는 확신이 생겼다.

The meetings helped me sort out a lot of thoughts, and I also worked hard on experiments. Thankfully, we concluded that I do not really need to change the direction I have been taking, and I feel even more strongly now that what matters is picking up speed and getting results sooner.

혼자 세상 심각하게 생각했는데 역시 충분히 스스로 생각했음에도 막막하다고 느껴질 때는 억지로라도 여러 사람에게 의견을 구하는 게 참 중요한 것 같다. 물론 다른 친구들이 도움을 구했을 때 발 벗고 나서서 충분히 시간을 쓰며 도와주는 게 먼저 쌓여야 나중에 그들도 기분 좋게 도와주는 것 같기도 해서 나도 의식적으로 일이 잘 안 풀려서 힘들어하는 친구들이 보이면 (내 눈에 보일 정도면 꽤 본인은 심각할 수 있다) 먼저 툭 물어보려고 노력하고 있다.

I was taking it way too seriously on my own, and it reminded me again that even if you have thought things through, when you still feel stuck, it is really important to push yourself to ask multiple people for their input. At the same time, I think people are more willing to help you gladly later if you have already built up a habit of stepping in and giving your time when others ask for help. So when I notice friends who seem to be struggling because things are not going well, and if I can tell, it probably means it is pretty serious for them, I try to casually check in first.

미국의 좋은 점이라면? 마법의 How are you doing이 있기 때문에 어느 정도 의견을 공유하고 싶다는 마음을 가졌는지 아닌지는 눈치를 챌 수가 있다 ㅎㅎ 우리나라도 조금 낯간지러울 수 있지만 이렇게 안부를 형식적으로라도 묻기 시작하는 문화가 생기길 바라본다.

One nice thing about the US, maybe, is that the magic phrase “How are you doing” exists, so you can usually tell whether someone wants to share a bit or not🤔 I kind of hope Korea also develops a culture where we at least ask how someone is doing, even if it feels a little awkward at first.

역시 바쁜 수요일! DGL group meeting, TA, SKL group meeting하고 나면 5시.. 하하. 그래도 요즘은 아침 여덟 시 이십 분쯤에는 출근해서 그나마 조금 실험할 시간이 있다.

Busy Wednesday, as always. After the DGL group meeting, TA, and the SKL group meeting, it is already 5😨 Still, these days I have been coming in around 8:20 in the morning, so at least I get a bit of time to run experiments.

내 뒤에 앉는 Chet이라는 친구(주말에 밥을 같이 먹었었던)와 이것저것 실험 얘기를 하곤 하는데, 다행히 최근에 예상대로 나오지 않은 assay 결과를 바탕으로 어떻게 다음 실험을 계획할 건지 좀 생각이 잡히고 있는 것 같다. Hunter라는 항상 밝게 인사해 주는 친구도 Chet이랑 어느 정도 겹치는 연구를 하고 있어서, 같이 셋이 얘기할 때도 많은데 서로 지금 고민이 되는 부분이 뭔지 털어놓는 것만으로도 (상대방이 완벽하게 잘 아는 분야가 아닐지라도) 큰 도움이 된다는 걸 느끼고 요즘엔 이것저것 얘기하려고도 노력하는데 이 친구들이 많이 도움이 됐다. Thanks!

I often talk about experiments with a friend named Chet who sits behind me, the same friend I ate with over the weekend. Thankfully, based on some assay results that did not turn out as expected, I feel like he is starting to see how he should plan the next set of experiments. There is also a friend named Hunter who always greets me so brightly, and since Hunter’s work overlaps with Chet’s to some extent, the three of us end up talking a lot. Lately I have been trying to talk more and share what I am stuck on, and I am realizing that even just sharing what you are wrestling with can help a lot, even if the other person does not know your exact area perfectly. These two have helped me a lot. Thanks!

랩미팅 후에는 이제 Job을 잡아서 랩을 떠나는 친구를 위한 송별회가 있었다. 같은 CCB 프로그램 학생으로 있다가 박사후과정까지 잠깐 하면서 열심히 생활했는데, 참 대단한 게 아이까지 갖고 기르면서도 5년 만에 졸업을 무사히 했다는 것. 존경스럽다. 포닥이든 학생이든 꼭 잊지 않고 송별회를 해주는 게 참 따뜻하고 좋다.

After the lab meeting, there was a farewell gathering for a friend who is leaving the lab because she got a job. She was in the same CCB program as a student and even stayed briefly as a postdoc, working hard the whole time. What is truly impressive is that she had and raised a child and still graduated safely in five years. I really respect that. Whether someone is a postdoc or a student, it feels so warm and nice that we always make sure to hold a party for them.

오늘은 종일 실험할 수 있는 날! 다만 실험 결과가 내 상상과 좀 달라서 골치가 아프다.. 또 해결할 문제가 쌓이는구만 ㅎㅎ 오늘은 퇴근을 일찍 해서 차가 있는 한국인 박사과정 친구와 함께 항상 가던 코스트코가 아닌 south bay쪽에 있는 곳을 다녀왔다. 덕분에 20kg 쌀도 사고 이것저것 장을 많이 봤다. 프링글스는 먹고 싶었지만 차마 담지는 않았… 갑자기 문득 든 생각인데, 식품산업에서 인공감미료로 설탕을 상당 부분, 성공적으로 대체했는데 이런 과자류도 그렇게 먼 미래에는 몸에 꽤 괜찮으면서 맛도 비슷한 과자가 나올 수 있지 않을까 간절히 바라본다.

Today was a day when I could run experiments all day. But the results are a bit different from what I imagined, so it is giving me a headache. Another problem to solve added to the pile haha… I left work early and went with a Korean PhD friend who has a car to a Costco in the South Bay, not the one I always go to. Thanks to that, I bought a 20 kg bag of rice and stocked up on a bunch of other things too. I wanted Pringles, but I could not bring myself to put them in the cart. A random thought: the food industry has successfully replaced a large portion of sugar with artificial sweeteners. So I really hope that in the near future, even snacks like chips can be made in a way that is actually pretty decent for your body while still tasting almost the same.

오늘은 수업, TA, 실험 이외에 박사 자격시험 준비를 잘하고 있는지 2학년 동기 전체가 모여서 Check in을 했다. 내가 거기서 요즘 내 연구에 대한 조사를 계속하면서 느끼게 된 점을 program director에게 질문했는데, 답변이 참 좋아서 공유하려 한다.

Today, besides class, TA, and experiments, the entire second year cohort got together for a check in on how we are preparing for the PhD qualifying exam. While we were there, I asked the program director something I have been thinking about as I keep researching my own project, and the answer was so good that I want to share it.

질문은 저번 주에 여기 올렸었던 “내 연구가 이 세상 그 누군가에 의해서 이미 (방법론적으로 동일하지 않더라도) 행해지지 않은, 유일한 것임을 어떻게 확신하는가?“였고, 답변은 100% 확신은 없고, 그게 중요한 문제라면 이미 공식적으로 연구 결과가 출판되지는 않았더라도 반드시 누군가는 비슷한 것을 지금 하고 있을 거다. 그래서 일단 본인이 계속 끈기 있게 할 수 있는 좋아하는 주제를 찾고, 꾸준히 정답에 가까워지도록 노력하는 수밖에 없다고. 몇 개월 차이로 늦게 연구 결과를 공유하더라도, 그 깊이에 따라 진정한 original로 인정받을 수 있기에 너무 그런 것에 집착할 필요는 없다고 해주셨다. 정말 맞는 말이고, 최선을 다하며 묵묵히 할 수밖에 없지 않나 싶다.

The question was the one I wrote here last week, “How can I be sure my research is truly unique, something that no one in the world has already done, even if not in exactly the same methodological way?” The answer was that there is no one hundred percent certainty, and if it is an important problem, then even if no results have been officially published yet, someone is almost certainly working on something similar right now. So in the end, all you can do is find a topic you genuinely like and can stick with persistently, and keep working to get closer to the right answer. Even if you end up sharing results a few months later than someone else, the depth of your work can still earn you recognition as the true original, so you do not need to obsess over it too much. It is so true, and it makes me feel like all I can do is do my best.

Saturday, February 28

오늘도 운동 잘 다녀오고 (gym 근처 벽에 귀여운 달팽이?가 붙어있었다), 최근에 얻었던 data를 도대체 어떻게 잘 해석할지 고민을 많이 했다. 논문도 최대한 읽고는 있는데, 일단 막힌 실험부터 빨리 풀어야 할 것 같아서 내일은 연구실에 나가보려 한다. 3월도 다들 화이팅!

I worked out again today, and there was a cute little snail stuck to a wall near the gym, lol. I also spent a lot of time thinking about how to properly interpret the data I got recently. I am trying to read as many papers as I can, but I think I need to solve the experiments I am stuck on first, so I am planning to go to the lab tomorrow. Let’s hang in there for March too💪
