Understanding is the bottleneck

Sunday, July 5

Long run with Jongbin for the first time in a while! Thankfully, the area around my ankle bone seems to have gotten better, but I am trying not to overdo it. I asked GPT a lot, and apparently now is the time to gradually reduce intensity. After running, I stopped by the gym for a quick workout, since I could not go yesterday because it was a holiday, and then ate a sandwich from Gus’s very leisurely at the park in front of my place while listening to 핑계고. Since I have been running outdoors more often, only my shirt line stayed untanned, so I just took off my shirt and tanned for a bit, which even made me feel better. In Korea, this would be unimaginable, but I like that no one here cares. At home, I spent the rest of the afternoon working all day. Thankfully, the new pipeline seems to be working pretty well, so by tomorrow, I think I will be able to narrow down the final candidates and order the genes. If this works in vitro, I cannot even imagine how thrilling it will feel! I hope the day to test it comes soon.

Finally, by the afternoon, the first and second rounds of design were finished, and I ordered 96 designs including the WT control. After dinner, I decided to finally sit down and write the blog posts I had been putting off for so long. I wrote one today, and since it will take at least three business days for the genes to arrive, I plan to finish all the overdue posts before then, look back on some of the previous research I had done, and start the actual experiments around this Friday!

Today, I had a meeting with Maggie for the first time in three weeks, and we talked quite a bit. Thankfully, she liked the design rationale. I also got positive feedback on the thesis framing I used when I presented in the Shokat Lab last time, so I felt good🙂 In the afternoon, I kept writing blog posts as expected, and then went for a short easy run, but oops.. after running a little over 2 miles, the area around my ankle bone suddenly started hurting again, so I stopped for now. Thankfully, GPT (how would I live without you..,) encouraged me based on my recent records, saying that sub-2 could still be possible even if I rest enough. So I will just relax, skip the lower body tomorrow too, and try a short, easy run test on Thursday.

Other than briefly stopping by the Scientific Vendor Expo at lunch and attending Journal Club at 4, I completely locked in and finished all the blog posts. These days, after going all in on computation again, I have fallen back into the pattern of sleeping and waking a little late, like before. I want to reset things properly and become an early bird again starting tomorrow ㅎㅎ I also need to start reviewing the protocol and prepare thoroughly so that I can start right away when the genes arrive. In the evening, although it was a bit late, I went to Costco, got groceries efficiently, and quickly did meal prep. Since school offers a $10 Lyft discount starting at 8 PM, I can get to Costco for free, so I tried calling one right at 8. Costco closes at 8:30, so it is a bit tight, but since they let people enter until 8:30, I think it works fine. I should use this more often.

Today was such an efficient day that I can genuinely praise myself for spending it well. I woke up on time, work went well according to plan, I stuck to my diet, read papers after work, and even went to work out twice. There were quite a few follow-up tasks related to a side project, so I quickly took care of all of them. I also finally feel like I have started to get a sense of the model architecture that had been a bit mathematically difficult for me to understand. Based on that, I think I have found a direction, and if I keep working on it through the weekend, I may be able to share preliminary results from another side project early next week. After lunch, the weather was also nice, so everything just seemed to go well today. I know very well how much these well-spent days can accumulate into something much bigger, so I want to carry this momentum and keep living more diligently. Also, I tested my ankle today after it felt a bit off on Tuesday, and it felt pretty okay! I will still need to shorten my weekend long run a bit, but I am really relieved🙂

Friday, July 10

It was a very productive day. An finally passed his qual, and to return the favor after I bought him lunch last time, he took me to Marcella’s Lasagneria. Honestly, the food was not mind-blowing, and I was a little disappointed that the carbonara had cream in it ㅎㅎㅎ. The lasagna was decent. An’s PI, Bo, was also the chair of my qual committee, and somehow we have ended up working on two collaborations together. Today, we shared our thoughts on next steps and organized the action items. I think An and I can work very well in complementary ways, and I tried to shape the project so I can directly help with his thesis work. Bill also liked the idea during our meeting in the afternoon, so I think it will probably be confirmed soon. I should do my best. After my meeting with Bill, I attended qualifying exam practice talks by Leah and Alex, the last two people in my CCB cohort who still need to take the qual. I especially enjoy short science talks because the speakers have to compress their work into a single presentation and deliver only the essential points. It feels like the core of the research is concentrated in the talk, which I often find exciting.

“From Survive to Thrive: Life Sciences in the AI Era”라는 제목으로 진행됐는데, 사실 잠깐만 있으려고 하다가 어쩌다 보니 끝까지 있게 되었다 ㅎㅎ 오전 강의가 참 기억에 남는데, industry panel로 오신 연사분들의 구성이 많은 도움이 되었다.

Today, I attended the KOLIS 2026 Annual Conference held at UCSF, following last year’s event. The theme was “From Survive to Thrive: Life Sciences in the AI Era.” I originally planned to stay only briefly, but somehow I ended up staying until the end ㅎㅎ The morning session was especially memorable, and the lineup of speakers on the industry panel was very helpful. I am sharing a few slides that left a strong impression on me. As someone who actively uses agents these days, I could not agree more with the idea that “understanding is now the bottleneck.” Since my research constantly requires me to find a clear reason for what I am doing, I also found myself relating more than before to the various business-related talks in the afternoon session. In particular, the question, “What problem are we solving, and why do we think customers will choose us?” really stood out to me. I also enjoyed the food, spent time with Jongbin, and had many good conversations, so overall, I think it was a very useful experience. People say that networking becomes increasingly important as you move further through your degree, but for now, I feel more strongly that I first need to do research that I can confidently call my own.
