오늘도 종빈이랑 10마일을 뛰었다. 천천히 뛰려고 의식적으로 노력했는데 훨씬 나은 것 같다. 간만에 초밥을 사서 먹고, 집안일을 쭉 하고, 남는 시간엔 쉬면서 논문 figure 마지막 수정..! 했다. 이제는 처음부터 어떤 quality로 만들어야 할지, DPI, format 등에 대한 공부를 했기에 다음부터는 훨씬 수월해질 거라 믿는다!

Today, I ran 10 miles with Jongbin again, and I consciously tried to run slowly, which felt much better. I bought sushi for the first time in a while, did chores around the house, and I rested while making the final edits to the paper figures..! Now that I have studied what kind of quality, DPI, format, and so on I should aim for from the beginning, I believe it will be much easier next time!

Monday, June 8

아침 DeGrado Lab postdoc candidate의 seminar를 시작으로 (total synthesis, methodology background였다), Bill 교수님과 미뤄진 미팅을 했다. 지금까지 정리한 내용을 바탕으로 therapeutic relevance를 늘리면서 조금 더 현실적인 방향으로 수정한 aim을 말씀드렸고, 다행히 좋아하셨다. 물론 이 방향을 택하게 되면 Maggie가 하고 있는 것과 이루고자 하는 goal이 조금 겹칠 수 있어서 꼭 논의할 예정! 그래도 방법론이 다르니 괜찮을 거라고 말씀하셨기에, 다행히 Aim 1에서 뻗어 나온 두 갈래 중 하나는 잘 정해진 것 같다! 또 좋은 소식은 thesis committee가 최종 확정되었다는 것. Jim, Bill, and Kevan 이렇게 셋인데, 거의 상상할 수 있는 가장 좋은 committee를 꾸리게 되어서 (서로 사이도 좋고!), 과분하기 그지없다. 자랑스러운 지도학생이 되도록 노력해야지.

Starting with a DeGrado Lab postdoc candidate’s seminar in the morning (his background was in total synthesis and methodology), I had my postponed meeting with Bill. Based on what I had organized so far, I told him about a revised aim that increases therapeutic relevance and moves in a slightly more realistic direction, and thankfully, he liked it. Of course, if I choose this direction, it may overlap a bit with what Maggie is doing and the goal she wants to achieve, so I will definitely discuss it with her first! Still, Bill said it should be okay because the methodology is different, so thankfully, I think one of the two branches that came out of Aim 1 has been decided well! Another piece of good news is that my thesis committee has finally been confirmed. It will be Jim, Bill, and Kevan, which is almost the best committee I could imagine, and they also get along well! I feel extremely fortunate. I should work hard to become a student they can be proud of.

Tuesday, June 9

하루 종일 내일 있는 joint meeting 준비. 이제는 candidacy에 apply해야 해서 thesis title을 잠정적으로나마 정해야 하기 때문에, 뭔가 어느 정도 내일 결론이 나야 한다! 점심에는 잠깐 Bill이 랩 사람들과 protein sequencing에 대한 brainstorming 시간을 만들어서 관련해서 공부도 하고 어느 정도 의견도 내보았다. 참 낯선 분야의 새로운 문제를 접할 때마다 세상에는 얼마나 중요한 문제들이 많을까.. 라는 막연한 생각을 하게 되는데, 요즘에 느끼는 건 솔직히 나는 특별히 어떤 문제를 풀어야만 한다기보다는 중요한 문제를 내 힘으로 풀고 싶다는 게 중요한 사람인 것 같다. 어딜 가도 중요한 문제를 풀 수 있는 환경이라면 행복하게 지냈을 것 같기도.

I spent the whole day preparing for tomorrow’s joint meeting. Now that I need to apply for candidacy, I have to decide on a tentative thesis title. That means we need to reach a conclusion tomorrow! At lunch, Bill briefly organized a brainstorming session with lab members about protein sequencing, so I studied a bit about it and shared some thoughts. Whenever I encounter a new problem in an unfamiliar field, I vaguely think about how many important problems must exist in the world.. These days, I honestly feel that I am not necessarily someone who has to solve a specific problem. Rather, what matters to me is solving an important problem with my own ability. I think I could have been happy anywhere, as long as it was an environment where I could work on important problems.

Wednesday, June 10

드디어! 우리 셋 모두가 중요하며 흥미롭다고 생각하는 문제를 잘 정했다. 총 3가지 방향으로 thesis project를 나누게 되었는데, 앞으로 어떻게 될지 기대가 된다. 이제부터는 정말 수업도 없고 쏟아부을 수 있을 것 같아 후련하고 아주 기쁘다. 언젠가 꼭 성과가 나오고 공개되어도 될 즈음에 여기 공유할 수 있기를! 아 그리고 당분간 머리 자를 시간이 없을 것 같아서 오늘 저녁 늦게 마지막 시간에 갔는데, 아니 머리를 너무 대충 자르셔서 ㅠㅠ 머리가 무슨 밤송이가 되어버렸다. 이제 다른 곳을 알아보려고 한다… 솔직히 위생도 썩 좋지가 않아서 클리퍼가 닿는 부분에 염증이 생긴 적도 있었는데, 왔다 갔다 시간도 많이 걸리고.. 다음에는 집 근처에 괜찮은 곳이 있길래 거기를 시도해보려고 한다. 내 시간도 돈이라고 생각하면 막 엄청나게 차이 나지는 않을 것 같다.

Finally! The three of us decided on a problem that we all think is important and interesting. The thesis project will be divided into three directions, and I am excited to see how things develop. From now on, I really do not have classes anymore, so I feel relieved and very happy that I can fully pour myself into the work. I hope that someday, when results come out and can be shared publicly, I can write about them here! Oh and since I do not think I will have time to get a haircut for a while, I went late tonight during the last appointment slot. But wow, they cut my hair so carelessly ㅠㅠ. My hair turned into some kind of chestnut burr. I think I will look for another place now… Honestly, the hygiene there was not that great either, and I once had inflammation where the clipper touched my skin. It also takes a lot of time to go back and forth.. Next time, I found a place near home that seems decent, so I will try that. If I think of my time as money too, the difference probably will not be that huge.

오늘은 오랜만에 종빈이랑 윤서 누나와 함께 아지트라고 할 수 있는 카페 (Timber + Tide, 685 Gateway Blvd, South San Francisco, CA 94080)로 가서 일에 집중했다. 어제 미팅 내용을 정리해서 교수님들께 보내드리고, 새로운 방향에 대해서도 본격적인 테스트를 해봤다. 뭔가 길을 찾은 것 같은데.. 확실하진 않다. 코스트코에도 들러서 장을 보고, 곧 동기들과 kayak camping을 떠나는데 필요한 것들을 샀다. 곧 저녁으로 Hunter, Chet, Josh와 함께 형제갈비 (Brothers Restaurant, 4128 Geary Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94118)로 저녁을 먹으러 갔다. 이렇게 랩 사람들과 사적으로 저녁을 먹으러 나온 건 처음인데, Hunter라는 친구가 여자친구와 더불어 한식을 참 좋아하기도 하고, 퀄 끝나면 밥을 사주겠다고 계속 얘기해왔어서 오늘 이렇게 가게 됐다. 다들 심성이 착하고 순둥순둥해서 (그리고 유쾌하다), 같이 있어도 부담이 없다 ㅎㅎ 물론 문화를 전부 이해할 수는 없지만… 고마운 친구들이다. 그리고 이 Korean BBQ place가 Hunter가 생각하는 SF 최고였는데, 오!! 진짜 오랜만에 제대로 된 걸 먹는 느낌이 날 정도로 기분 좋게 식사했다. 오랜만에 소맥도 말아주고 ㅋㅋ… (다들 왜 이렇게 놀라는 건지 모르겠다) 야무지게 먹고, 디저트로 근처의 U :Dessert Story (3489 16th St, San Francisco, CA 94114)에서 제대로 빙수까지 먹고 기분 좋게 하루를 마무리했다!

Today, I went with Jongbin and Yoonseo for the first time in a while to the cafe that almost feels like our hideout (Timber + Tide), and focused on work. I summarized yesterday’s meeting and sent it to the professors, and I also started testing the new direction more seriously. It feels like I may have found a path.. but I am not sure yet. We also stopped by Costco to get groceries and buy things I will need for kayak camping with our cohort soon. For dinner, I went with Hunter, Chet, and Josh to Brothers Restaurant. It was my first time privately going out to dinner with lab people like this. Hunter and his girlfriend both really like Korean food, and he had been saying that he would buy me dinner after I passed the qual, so we finally went today. Everyone is kind-hearted, gentle, and funny, so I do not feel pressured when I am with them ㅎㅎ. Of course, I cannot understand every cultural detail, but they are friends I am grateful for. This Korean barbecue place is Hunter’s pick for the best in SF, and wow!! It really felt like I was eating proper Korean food for the first time in a while, so I had a very pleasant meal. I also made 소맥 for the first time in a while ㅋㅋ… I do not know why everyone was so surprised. We ate very well, then went nearby to U :Dessert Story for 빙수 as dessert, and wrapped up the day in a great mood!

Friday, June 12

Ethel이라는 postdoc이 DeGrado Lab에서 여정을 마치고 다음 주에 떠나는데, 정말 따뜻하게도 랩 멤버들이 롤링페이퍼를 써주고 표지로 WE LOVE ETHEL을 amino acid one-letter code로 장식했다. Ethel이 peptide 관련 연구를 했어서 이런 아이디어로 편지지를 꾸민 건데, 참.. 받으면 행복할 것 같다. 나와는 많은 교류는 없었지만 랩 분위기를 너무 무겁지 않게 만들어주는 분이어서 인상이 좋았는데, 앞으로의 일도 잘 되길 바란다!! 오후엔 Bill과 미팅을 잘 마치고 드디어 thesis title을 정해 candidacy에 지원했다. 저녁으로는 Taqueria El Buen Sabor (699 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA 94110)라는 새로운 타코집을 시도해봤다. 막 엄청 맛있거나 그러진 않았다 솔직하게 ㅋㅋ.. 이후엔 Mission Dolores Park 구경을 갔고 (마침 영화 상영 이벤트가 있었지만 너무 추워서 보지는 않았다), 일찍 집에 들어와 내일 있는 캠핑 갈 준비를 했다.

A postdoc named Ethel is finishing her journey in the DeGrado Lab and leaving next week, and very warmly, the lab members wrote a rolling letter for her and decorated the cover with “WE LOVE ETHEL” using amino acid one-letter codes. Since Ethel worked on peptide-related research, the letter paper was decorated with that idea, and wow.. I think she will be happy to receive it. I did not interact with her a lot, but I had a good impression of her because she made the lab atmosphere feel less heavy. I hope everything goes well for her next step!! In the afternoon, I had a good meeting with Bill and finally decided on my thesis title and applied for candidacy. For dinner, we tried a new taco place called Taqueria El Buen Sabor. Honestly, it was not incredibly delicious or anything ㅋㅋ.. After that, we went to look around Mission Dolores Park, and there happened to be a movie showing, but it was too cold, so we did not watch it. I came home early and prepared for tomorrow’s camping trip.

Saturday, June 13 ~ Sunday, June 14

Loon Lake kayak camping. 문득 생각해보니 나는 캠핑 자체를 한 적이 없는데, 이걸 첫 경험으로 했다는 게 돌이켜보면 좀 당황스럽다 ㅋㅋ. 대강 설명하자면, 캠핑에 필요한 모든 장비와 식량을 카약에 실은 후 한 시간 정도 열심히 호수를 건너 캠핑 장소에 도착하고, 하룻밤을 보낸 뒤 다음 날 다시 카약에 짐을 챙겨 돌아오는 일정이었다. 제대로 된 카약 자체가 처음이었고, 밖에서 아주 오랜만에 자려니 조금 빡세기도 했지만, 동기들과 함께여서인지 정말 재밌는 경험이었다. 카약은 감을 잘 잡았다고 말할 수는 없지만 물 위를 다니는 건 역시나 좋았다(물이 정말 정말 맑았다). 또 처음으로 스모어를 제대로 만들어 먹어봤고 ㅎㅎ 해가 정말정말 좋아서 (사실 너무 좋아서 꽤나 심한 화상을 입었다 ㅋㅋ), 영혼까지 치유되는 느낌이었다. 무엇보다 인터넷 자체를 쓸 수 없어서 디지털 디톡스가 되는 것도 좋았다. 책을 가져와 읽는 친구들도 많았고, 여유롭게 낮잠을 자거나 하이킹을 하는 친구들도 있었다. 말 그대로 평소의 삶에서 완전히 벗어나 원하는 걸 하면서 시간을 보내는 의미 있는 시간이랄까… 캠핑에서의 시간뿐만 아니라, Loon Lake까지는 SF에서 차로 4시간 정도 이동했는데, 오고 가면서 재밌는 대화도 하고 노래도 들어서 이 과정도 소소하게 행복했다. 돌아오는 날에는 중간에 가본 적 없는 Sacramento의 작은 마을에 들러 점심과 커피까지… 재밌는 기억으로 오래오래 남을 것 같다.

Loon Lake kayak camping. Thinking about it now, I had never really gone camping before, so looking back, it feels a bit funny that this was my first camping experience ㅋㅋ. To roughly explain, we loaded all the camping gear and food into kayaks, paddled hard across the lake for about an hour to reach the campsite, spent one night there, and then packed everything back into the kayaks the next day to return. It was my first time doing proper kayaking, and sleeping outside for the first time in a very long time was a bit tough, but it was such a fun experience because I was with my cohort. I cannot say that I really got the hang of kayaking, but being on the water was great, as expected. The water was really clear. I also properly made and ate s’mores for the first time ㅎㅎ. The sun was really, really strong, actually too strong, so I got pretty badly sunburned ㅋㅋ, but it felt like my soul was being healed. Most of all, I liked that I could not use the internet at all, so it became a digital detox. Many friends brought books to read, and others relaxed by taking naps or going hiking. It was literally a meaningful time to completely step away from everyday life and spend time doing whatever we wanted. Not only the time at the campsite, but also the drive to Loon Lake, which took about four hours from SF, was really enjoyable. We had fun conversations and listened to music on the way there and back. On the way back, we also stopped by a small town near Sacramento that I had never been to before and had 해 lunch and coffee… I think this will stay with me as a positive memory for a long, long tim

이번에 가장 크게 느낀 건 (뭐 모든 미국인이 그런 건 아니겠지만), 상대적으로 미국에서는 더 여유로워질 수 있는 환경에 노출되기 쉽다는 것. 어렸을 때부터 다양한 outdoor activity를 하는 친구들이 많고, 이런 게 상당히 흔하다 보니 애들 자체가 더 씩씩하게 잘 크는 것 같기도 하다. 뭐 내가 자란 환경이 한국을 완벽히 대표하지는 않겠지만, 상대적으로 난 다양한 장소에 가서 여러 경험을 하는 기회가 성인이 되기 전까지는 많지 않았다. 장점만 있고 단점만 있는 교육 시스템은 없겠지만, 이런 부분은 미국의 큰 장점이라고 생각했다! 씩씩하게 크는 것 ㅎㅎ. 미국에 있는 동안 다양한 outdoor activity를 해봐야겠다.

The biggest thing I felt this time was that, although of course this does not apply to every American, the U.S. seems to make it relatively easier to be exposed to environments where people can become more relaxed. Many people here grow up doing various outdoor activities from a young age, and because that is quite common, I wonder if it helps them grow up to be more resilient. Of course, the environment I grew up in does not perfectly represent Korea, but relatively speaking, I did not have many chances to go to different places and have diverse experiences before becoming an adult. There is no education system with only advantages or only disadvantages, but I thought this part was a major strength of the U.S.! Growing up resiliently ㅎㅎ. While I am in the U.S., I should try many different outdoor activities.
