INTJ

Chicken with shio kombu today! We each got our ingredients ready and timed it so we could cook together. The Yeopgi Tteokbokki last time was so, so spicy that we couldn’t finish it, but this time we polished everything off. Afterward, we watched The Godfather together. Wow… I could see why it always comes up on lists of recommended movies. It’s quite an old film, but it looks beautiful, too. We used an app called Teleparty to watch together this time, and I especially liked being able to sync the movie and chat along the way. It feels much more like watching together than watching separately and talking about it afterward.

Today, I worked through my blog backlog and kept organizing my directories (the Yellowstone post should be up soon). Having so many photos gives me a chance to look back on the trip, which is nice, but I really should keep up with these records a little at a time before they pile up.. These days, I’m constantly taking apart and reconsidering the structure of how I work, beyond just organizing files. Following the principle I set a while ago: keeping just one authoritative version of each piece of information. Getting the work right in front of me done is important, but I think building a structure I can keep using matters, too, so I’m trying to take it step by step.

Back to morning workouts! I keep thinking about how important sleep is. I can relate to the idea that being sleepy makes you stupid… Even if I plant myself in a chair, I actually can’t concentrate as well as I think. Today, I sorted out the direction and next steps for my project with Bo and An. Separating what we should start now from what should wait until we see the results made it a little clearer where to begin. I had experiments to do, too, and helped Dr. Kim with some experiments in the evening. Here’s to starting the week well, one step at a time!

I headed to the hospital this morning for cat allergy testing. There still isn’t really a way to address the underlying problem, so for now I’m going to try making good use of antihistamines. ..! I also had a lab meeting in the afternoon and wrote down some research-related thoughts in my notes. Lately, I’ve been realizing that taking the time to think carefully about why something happens is just as necessary as doing the experiments. Especially while juggling several projects, I feel like my compulsion to get everything done quickly may be making me neglect the important process of understanding things. Finding this balance will probably remain an essential part of the process..

The morning sky was so pretty. There were lots of little clouds spread across it, so I took a photo. Even the route I take every day can feel quite different just because of the sky haha. In the afternoon, I had a meeting with Evan Miller at Berkeley about a new dye (very, very interesting!!) and came back to the lab. I still had things to finish, so it was a pretty tough day that kept me at the lab late. Starting new projects while continuing to check the experimental setup takes more work than I expected. Still, I’m going to try to keep things organized and move forward one step at a time.

Today, I sorted out what we need to check experimentally first ahead of my meeting with Bo. I think properly checking the results we’re looking at now should come before continuing to add other things. An and I also had burgers for lunch for the first time in a while, and I wrapped up the week and headed home in the afternoon. In the evening, I tried a new MBTI test, and both my girlfriend and I got INTJ..!? There were quite a few questions, and I even answered the follow-up ones, so I put some effort into it. The first two dimensions have always been a bit borderline, around 60:40, and I often used to get ISTJ, but this time my E had dropped a lot and my N had increased. An interesting result.. It also called me a cool-headed scientist. As expected? Maybe science really does suit me haha. Then I read through the INTJ traits, and it was almost exactly how I see myself, as if someone had been watching me😅😳

This weekend’s cooking project was curry! We each prepared our ingredients and cooked together again, and it was another success haha. We simmered chicken and tomatoes low and slow until it turned out wonderfully thick and rich. Making the same food together has become a pretty natural part of our weekends, and it feels like we’re spending quality time together even though we’re far apart. In the evening, we also studied together in our own little virtual library over Zoom…! I like feeling that we’re together even while we’re each doing our own work. We decided to try playing a game together next weekend for the first time in a while. Apparently, there’s an escape room game that requires two players, so we’re thinking of trying that👍
