At My Own Pace

Sunday, October 18

Fall really seems to have arrived now, with red leaves catching my eye along the street. Today I meal-prepped and kept working.. I am learning things I never knew when I was doing wet lab work. Just when I start to feel a little relieved and think there can’t be anything else to consider, new problems appear, and I solve them and learn… The process itself makes me feel alive, but sometimes (especially when things keep going badly haha) I get sick of it too. At times I feel overwhelmed, wondering how long I will have to keep confronting my own shortcomings. But I have experienced how the process has helped me become someone I find more meaningful, so I am trying not to be too hard on myself and to keep going, one step at a time..

I had a good morning meeting with my lab mentor Maggie (her intelligence always shines through..). I had something to send at USPS, so I went to get lunch too. I simply looked for the closest place on Google Maps, and the lamb kebab at Batman Gyro Grill was surprisingly delicious haha. The food truck has a big Batman picture on it, and when I had passed it before I hadn’t been interested at all. What a lucky find! I felt a little foggy in the afternoon, probably because I hadn’t had caffeine, but made it through. My workout program is seven weeks long, with six weeks plus one final week when I can skip lifting and just do cardio, so I don’t have caffeine before my morning workout that week. I do this intentionally to reduce my tolerance, but I can’t help suddenly feeling sleepy lol. In the evening I finally checked my Asan scholarship essay and documents one last time and submitted them. Suddenly writing about my motivation, study plans, and what I want to do in the future made me feel like I was applying to school again, and I wondered why I was so bad at writing. Maybe it’s because I don’t write things completely from beginning to end myself very often these days, especially in Korean. As it happened, I also watched a video today about how using AI could make you less intelligent. Hmm. Of course, the video also said that many studies show benefits from using AI well, and that we should be careful not to use it thoughtlessly as a replacement for ourselves. So I set a rule for myself not to move on without understanding, and I feel like it is working well. Of course, there is really, really so much to learn; it is fun, but sometimes I feel like my brain is literally going to explode lol… Still, it is clear that I can’t go back to a time without it. At least for me.

Today I made the order of steps for improving a binder a little clearer. Instead of changing the structure and sequence and everything else all at once, I’ll first optimize the sequence thoroughly within the current structure, then tackle whatever remains unresolved. The calculations are slower than I expected, so I have been separating the time the GPU actually spends on predictions from the time spent preparing or waiting, and continuing to improve the parts where completed results can be reused. I’m also gradually catching up on my blog!

Another busy day of experiments and meetings. I also saw the newly released RFD4-Proteina and couldn’t just pass it by, so I started comparing it in a small pilot. I was curious whether it could address shortcomings of the existing method in a different way. Honestly, what has been a little frustrating lately is that it seems clear that even research papers are falling into the hands of big tech companies in my field, and I feel at a loss about how to respond as an individual. It makes me feel like I really need to graduate quickly, while also giving me a reason to think more deeply about what on earth I should do and what I want to do.

I had so much work that I couldn’t have a proper lunch and just got by with some snacks (ugh, I should eat properly.. I need to do better). As I try to adapt a new design method to my situation, there are so many things to decide: which interactions must be maintained, what to allow in the intermediate steps, and what to check at the end. As soon as I apply one thing, a better model comes out, and everything is moving so fast that it feels impossible to keep up. It reminds me of the saying that a little bird trying to keep up with a stork will tear its legs. My girlfriend is working hard on her research too, so we talk about research a lot. She told me that even though research trends keep changing, I should give myself some breathing room and think about how to make things my own, rather than trying to learn everything quickly at once. Her warm words really gave me strength. Yes… I should take it step by step at my own pace without rushing.

I went for a short run in the morning and headed to the lab early to help Dr. Kim with an experiment. We finished quickly, and he bought me coffee. He plans to apply for faculty positions in Korea once he finishes revising his current paper, so we talked about that and other things. He has looked out for me a lot and is such a kind person, so I really hope things work out the way he wants. I also made it to RIPS, my only class of the week, and spent the afternoon further optimizing binder candidates for the design competition and narrowing them down by comparing the prediction results. In the evening, I went to Han Il Kwan with friends who started at UCSF with me and ate an enormous amount of Korean food. It hadn’t been that long, but grilling meat properly was still so satisfying. Everyone is hardworking, and I feel a small sense of camaraderie with them, like we are colleagues? Everyone is always saying that we need to work hard and graduate quickly lol.

These days I really don’t have much to do on weekends besides research, so I just keep working! Lately I have been trying to focus on at most three topics a day… Hmm, neither research nor organizing gets finished all at once, but I am continuing step by step so I don’t lose what I’ve already done or repeat the same work.
