Small Celebrations

Sunday, September 20

Another Sunday starting with exercise! After swimming, cycling, and running, I stopped by Gus’s, showered, and went to Costco with Jongbin. We were looking at things to cook next week, but wow, the meat portions were enormous lol. I wanted to make suyuk, but it was just too much.. So I decided to go to H Mart tomorrow and get a smaller amount. These days, instead of buying chicken breasts or thighs separately, I get two ridiculously good-value rotisserie chickens and meal prep with them right away. It almost feels like cheating.. People say living in San Francisco is such a financial burden, but honestly, once housing is sorted out, everyday food expenses aren’t that different from Korea. As long as you cook instead of eating out!

Monday, September 21

A packed Monday. I got my morning workout in, and the rest of the day was lined up with a group meeting, an afternoon meeting, and H Mart in the evening. I had quite a lot to do and worked through lunch, but things seemed to be going well, so it didn’t feel tiring at all haha. In the evening, I went to H Mart for some pork for bossam. Lately, I’ve been struggling to eat such big portions of rice, so I also picked up a few things to try udon as another carbohydrate source. Boil it for just about thirty seconds, add some meat, and it’s ready to eat in no time. It was really convenient.

Tuesday, September 22

I had a check-in meeting and experiments with Abe in the morning. For lunch, I met Dr. Kim and a friend who had been in the same PhD cohort as him in Korea. We ate at a waterfront restaurant called The Ramp. It was a pretty spot, with boats in view and outdoor tables in the sunshine (the food wasn’t particularly amazing, though..). Afterward, I tried a latte at Chula Cafe, a cafe serving Mexican coffee that recently opened really close to home. The price was good, and I really liked it!! We took a leisurely walk and talked about this and that. Back at the lab, I checked on the designs that had thankfully expressed well and wrapped up the day.

Wednesday, September 23

Leg day today… I like how it feels like I’m clearing something out every time. After lunch and the afternoon’s activities, I went out for dinner with An, the person I spend the most time with in CCB, for his birthday. His close friend Caleb joined us (he and I had taken a class together, too), so it was the three of us. We went to Farmhouse Kitchen Thai Cuisine near Tartine, and oh…! It was a little pricey, but everything was delicious. Especially the tom kha!! I’d only had tom yum before, so I was surprised that a hot soup with just the right amount of sweetness could be this good. Caleb is a foodie by anyone’s standards, including his own, and between the Korean place last time and this, every place I follow him to seems to be a success. Afterward, we even got ice cream at another place he recommended, Garden Creamery! I was surprised by how delicious that was, too… We took our time enjoying a bit of the nighttime view at nearby Dolores Park.

Thursday, September 24

Oof.. During my workout today, I felt like a muscle was about to seize up. I stopped right away, but with so much work to do, I’d been trying to get back to the lab quickly and hadn’t paid enough attention to stretching. I think that’s probably why. I guess this is true of everything, but why does work always arrive all at once out of nowhere..

Friday, September 25

Summer break is officially over, and the first session of RIPS, which I love, has started. Going to it on Fridays and seeing my cohort really makes it feel like the academic year has begun. I’m unmistakably a third-year now, and my presentation is already scheduled for early next year. What I’d like is to do just two more presentations and then graduate…! Who knows whether that’ll happen. The discomfort I’d felt yesterday flared up after all, so I left work early and spent the rest of the day lying down. Hmm, I’d meant to get a lot done today so I could stay out of the lab tomorrow and take my time cooking. I’ll probably have to go back in tomorrow.

Saturday, September 26

I felt a bit better today, but I still didn’t think I should push myself, so I spent a little time on the stair climber and went to the lab to do the experiments I hadn’t managed yesterday. From now on, even if I have to miss a workout, I will never skip stretching..😠
